The aim of the research conducted within this section is to understand the behaviours exhibited by people working on the frontlines of high-risk industries. There will be a specific focus on why workers engage in risk taking, or do not utilise safety measures (such as PPE).

To date this stream of research includes one study, which investigated farmer attitudes towards ATV helmet wearing using the COM-B model (which conceptualises behaviour as rooted in capabilities, motivation and opportunity).  The key findings suggest that only 30% of the farmers who took part in our survey wore their ATV helmet frequently. Linked to the decision to not wear a helmet was the feeling that helmet wearing made the rider look ‘silly’, that it was easy to forget the helmet when in a rush, and that driver expertise negated the need for a helmet.  To read the results in full click on the link for the research paper and LinkedIn article below.
